How Can I Access Healthcare in Spain?

Spain has an extensive and high-quality network of public and private healthcare facilities, providing medical care for residents and visitors alike.

Public healthcare

In the event of an emergency, public hospitals will provide medical attention to anyone who requires immediate care. People who are legally resident in Spain and are entitled to public healthcare can receive emergency treatment free of charge.

For visitors and people who are not covered by the Spanish public healthcare system, however, emergency treatment may be subject to payment. Tourists and non-resident foreigners from the European Union should have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to access medically necessary public healthcare during a temporary stay. Those who do not have an EHIC, or who come from countries without a relevant healthcare agreement with Spain, should have private medical insurance.

For non-emergency healthcare, people who are entitled to public healthcare in Spain can apply for an individual health card at their local health centre. Once registered, they will normally be assigned a family doctor (GP), who can refer them to a specialist within the public healthcare system when necessary.
